I visited Club House Pererenan on their Trivia Thursday, a fortnightly community night that's been picking up steam since the venue opened late last year. The night was fully booked. Every table had a team. My steak comes with unlimited fries order. Drinks are cold and fizzy. And by the end of it, I understood why these kinds of community spaces are the backbone of Pererenan's hospitality scene.

A bit of backstory

Club House Pererenan opened in late November 2025, founded by the same person behind the original Supper Social supper club, Hugh Campbell. For those who don't know, Supper Social started in 2022 as a social experiment on the island: a way to help restaurants and connect people through communal dining. Over three years, thousands of people came through dinners across Bali, Europe, and Hong Kong. When Supper Social evolved into a publication, Club House became a natural extension of that same impulse: bringing people together.

But don't walk in expecting a restaurant, a bar, or a nightclub. The founder is clear about that.

"We're not here to be the best restaurant. We're not here to be the best bar. We're just here to be the in-between place, which is where people meet. It's community-driven. It's comfortable. It's easy. It's fun. Kind of like your local pub in Australia, basically."

He compares it to a surf lifesaving club back home in Australia: a place where dads meet, families come together, kids run around, and everything is built on community connection. "This is my surf club," he says. And honestly, walking in on a Thursday night, that's exactly what it felt like.

Walking in

I arrived around 6pm. The space is open-air, tucked along Jalan Munduk Kedungu in Pererenan, and the first thing you notice is how relaxed it is. No pretension at the door, no velvet ropes. Just palms, warm lighting, and the low hum of people settling into their evening.

By 6:30pm, the room was filling fast. Every table was a team, and I'd been told the night was fully booked. It speaks to the kind of community that's formed here. People who live on the island and needed somewhere easy to go on a weeknight.

The thing that struck me first was the staff. They greeted people by name. Not in that rehearsed hospitality way, but like they actually knew them. Turns out, that's by design. Club House has a members' app, and every member gets a free drink daily between 5 and 6pm. But beyond the perk, the app helped staff learn names. So when you walk in, someone says hey. And that small thing changes the whole feeling of a place.

The trivia

The host kicked things off and asked each table for their team name. It was immediately interactive. People were shouting names across the room, laughing at each other's choices, and the competitive energy was instant. But it never felt aggressive. It felt like a neighbourhood game night.

Rounds came and went, and the energy kept building. At one point, the whole room flipped: instead of tables competing against each other, it became the audience versus the host. Everyone unified into one voice, heckling, debating answers, laughing. Phones were suspiciously lit under a few tables, though officially, no one was caught peeking.

It was one of those nights where you forget you're at a venue. You just feel like you're somewhere you belong.

The food

It was also steak night, so I ordered the steak with unlimited fries. And yes, I kept reordering the fries throughout the night. Always good. The food isn't trying to be fine dining here. It's solid, satisfying, and designed to keep you at the table longer, not send you home early. It fits the vibe perfectly.

What makes it different

Bali has no shortage of places calling themselves community-driven. Hugh knows this.

"I think community is a big buzzword. But communities take time. You can't come in and out of communities. It's something that builds over time. You can't buy communities. I mean, you can buy people. But there's not true connection there."

What I saw at Club House didn't feel bought. It felt built. The way people moved between tables, the way strangers became teammates for the night, the way the staff felt like part of the group rather than separate from it. That's not something you can manufacture in a few months, but somehow, in just over six months since opening, Club House has gotten there.

The founder credits the island itself. Originally from Melbourne, he moved to Bali permanently in 2022, and speaks about the island with real gratitude. "The island has given me so much. I feel like I owe it a debt of gratitude. And this is my way of paying it back."

That ethos extends to how Club House partners with other brands and communities: always mutual, never transactional. They've helped brands launch in Bali. They've collaborated with collectives. And in return, the community keeps growing, organically, without the pressure of forced activations or influencer plays.

The night ahead

Trivia Thursday runs every second Thursday at 6:30pm, and if the 14th was anything to go by, you'll want to book ahead. The night I was there, the sky was clear, the room was full, and people stayed well past the final round.

It was a really lovely night. The kind of night where you leave thinking, I'll be back in two weeks. And next time, I'm bringing a bigger team.
